When having a face lift, some surgeons prefer to put their patients under a general anesthesia but generally you will be put under a local anesthetic with a sedative. This will leave you awake, but you will suffer no pain during the procedure.
The incisions the surgeon makes will be hidden from view and the locations will be determined by the type of face lift you require. Once the incisions are made, the skin is lifted and the muscle and connecting tissues are tightened. You may also require excess fat to be removed at the same time. Once this is done, the skin is stretched into place with the excess removed and the incision is rejoined by stitches or metal clips.
This is normally an outpatient operation that takes several hours. In some instances a hospital stay is needed, but generally it is not.
If there have been no complications, your face will be bandaged for about two days and in ten days your stitches will be removed.
